A string of evenly distributed lights can highlight a railing, pergola, wall, tree or covered patio. Unlike a single outdoor lamp, festoon and fairy lights create a line of decorative illumination that helps shape the appearance of the entire area.

The current range includes both solar and mains-powered designs. Available options differ in length, LED count, bulb style and colour, with strings featuring 10, 15, 20, 40 or 100 light points.

Solar or mains-powered garden lights?

Solar string lights are useful where no socket is available. A separate panel charges the built-in battery during the day, and a dusk sensor switches the LEDs on as daylight fades. Performance depends on sunlight exposure, panel position, weather, season and battery charge.

Mains-powered strings provide illumination without relying on daily sunlight. They do, however, need access to a suitable power supply. The available E27 ranges include versions approximately 10, 15 and 20 metres long and operate from a 220–240 V supply.

Solar fairy lights with automatic dusk operation

The solar range includes warm white and multicolour options. Selected products offer eight lighting modes, allowing the display to be changed from a steady or restrained effect to a more animated pattern.

The 20-light warm white string measures 3.8 m, while a 40-light multicolour version is approximately 7 m long. Solar icicle lights are also available. The 100-LED model measures approximately 10.5 m and has 6 cm decorative drops.

Position the solar panel where it can receive direct daylight for as much of the day as possible. Shade from buildings, plants, fences or balcony structures may reduce charging and shorten the evening operating time.

E27 festoon lights for a classic bulb display

E27 festoon lights use larger bulb-style fittings for a more defined patio-lighting effect. The approximately 20 m version is supplied with 20 warm white E27 LED bulbs spaced at roughly one-metre intervals. Their clear covers are made from plastic.

This model is rated IP44 and includes an end connector for compatible light strings. Before joining multiple sets, check the product instructions for compatibility and the permitted number of connected sections. Any connector that is not in use should remain properly sealed.

How to choose the correct string length

Measure the complete route rather than only the straight-line distance between the first and last mounting point. Allow extra cable for curves, hanging swags, height changes and the connection to the solar panel or power socket.

Also consider light spacing. Closely positioned miniature LEDs form a more continuous illuminated line, while larger bulbs spaced farther apart produce the familiar festoon-light appearance. These products are decorative and should not replace task or safety lighting around steps, entrances and paths.

Warm white or multicolour LEDs?

Warm white string lights create a calm, consistent display around seating areas and work well with plants, timber and outdoor textiles. They are also easier to coordinate with other warm-toned lighting.

Multicolour lights produce a more playful and noticeable effect. They are suited to parties, family gatherings and seasonal displays. Coordinating them with nearby lighting helps keep the overall arrangement visually balanced.

Installing outdoor string lights safely

Support the cable without crushing, piercing or pulling it tight. Keep it away from sharp edges and routes where it could become a trip hazard. Fixings should be suitable for the mounting surface and the weight of the complete string.

Inspect cables, plugs, connectors and bulb covers before use. Do not connect damaged lights. Mains-powered products must be disconnected before installation or maintenance. An IP44 rating provides protection against splashing water, but it does not make the product suitable for immersion or for electrical connections left in standing water.
